The 10th World Water Forum has begun its active phase. What are Indonesia's role and expectations as the host of this forum?
June 2024
As host of the 10th World Water Forum, Indonesia is playing an important role in tackling global water concerns and promoting sustainable water management techniques. This important event, which will take place in Bali from May 18 to 24, 2024, will bring together about 30,000 to 50,000 participants from around the world, including political leaders, government officials, multilateral organizations, academics, civil society representatives, and corporate players.
Indonesia's key goals for hosting the event are to promote worldwide collaboration on water challenges, share its successful water management methods, and advocate for actionable solutions. The Indonesian government promotes collaboration across sectors to overcome the water issue caused by climate change, which concerns food security and could lead to disputes over water resources (World Water Forum).
The forum's key themes include water security and prosperity, water for humans and nature, catastrophe risk reduction and management, governance and hydrodiplomacy, sustainable water finance, and knowledge and innovation. The ‘Sekretariat Kabinet Republik’ Indonesia is addressing these themes through workshops on science, regional best practices, and political solutions, resulting in practical policies and activities.
Indonesia is using this platform to highlight its water management technologies such as in agriculture, industry, and urban planning. The World Water Forum hosts a fair and exhibition to showcase international contributions to water sustainability and share technical information and technologies. The Indonesian government, including the House of Representatives, organized a series of plenary sessions and field trips, including a visit to Bali's traditional water management system at Subak Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Indonesia is committed to the success of the World Water Forum and achieving long-term, sustainable water management solutions.
At the opening of the Forum, President Joko Widodo emphasized several critical points. He called for urgent and collaborative global action to address water management issues, highlighting the importance of water conservation, clean water availability, sanitation, food and energy security, and disaster mitigation. He underscored the need for joint efforts involving community participation and support from various stakeholders, including international cooperation, to ensure the welfare of the global community.
President Widodo stated, "These agendas must be addressed as joint efforts, through community participation and support from various stakeholders, as well as dialogue and partnerships between countries in the spirit of togetherness for the welfare of the global community."?? He also reiterated Indonesia's commitment to achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all? (World Water Forum).
Overall, Indonesia is using its role as host to spur global action on water concerns, encouraging international cooperation and the adoption of sustainable practices to protect water supplies for future generations.
